I wanted to share this guide because I honestly believe it's one of the most effective, passive, and cost-efficient (time and money) ways to generate leads for your personal training business.
“A Simple No Cost Guide To Easily Generate Leads for your Personal Training Business”
By implementing this strategy, you can create a no-cost lead-generation asset capable of bringing in 1-10+ new passive leads per month, helping you grow your client base and increase your revenue.
I believe personal trainers without a setup similar to this, risk being at a serious disadvantage in today's competitive market.
Step 1: Set up a Google My Business profile
Step 2: Optimize your Google My Business profile
Step 3: Request and Collect Reviews
Step 4: Create a Website
Step 5: Optimize your Website
Step 6: Keep active with Reviews and Updates
Step 1: Set up a Google My Business profile
If you already have a Google My Business profile skip to Step 2.
If you haven't already, set up a Google My Business profile for your personal training business. This free tool provided by Google allows you to create a professional online presence, showcase your services, and interact with potential clients.
Here’s a guide on how to create a Personal Training Google Business profile.
Step 2: Optimize your Google My Business profile
Having a niche is highly beneficial for this section but, it is not essential. I would highly recommend establishing a niche at some point, as it helps you stand out from other trainers and clearly defines your area of expertise.
How can we make your business stand out?
By clearly defining what you do! This applies not only to Google but also to your potential future clients.
This is crucial because it helps Google better understand your services, resulting in higher search rankings. More importantly, it makes you the obvious choice for potential leads, as you become easier to find and establish yourself as the go-to expert in your field.
Let’s talk about how we can do this by spicing up your Google My Business profile.
Google My Business Name
Instead of a Google My Business name like John Doe Personal Trainer consider being more specific to create a visually appealing profile that attracts potential clients. For example, John Doe | Wellington Powerlifting Personal Trainer
Option two is much more visually appealing to someone in Wellington looking for a powerlifting coach, it clearly indicates your location and specialization. On top of that, you’re now fulfilling an obvious Google search phrase now too. Imagine you’re someone looking for a powerlifting personal trainer and you live in Wellington, you’re likely to search for something similar to “Wellington powerlifting personal trainer”. This means any time someone searches for something similar to this, you’re highly likely to show up on top of the search results, establishing yourself as the go-to expert in your area of expertise.
Google My Business Description
Let's look at a generic description for a PT business first.
This is great for describing who you are, but in this context, potential leads don’t really care about who you are or what you’ve done! What they care about is if you’re the person who can help them achieve their desired goals.
So how do we do that? Through sharp concise storytelling.
Powerlifting coach example
Female strength coach example
Hit them in the heart and create an emotional response by showing you can help them with their problem or goal.
Why do your clients come to train with you? What is it that you commonly help them achieve? Figure this out, then clearly communicate it and I promise you will get more leads.
Google My Business Services
Include relevant services that align with your unique style of training to help Google paint a clear picture of your personal training business. Keeping it specific and tailored to your expertise will lead to higher rankings in search results when potential leads are searching for trainers like you. By optimizing your services to reflect your specialized approach, you can increase your online visibility and attract the right clients who are looking for your unique training style.
Avoid the trap of being a jack of all trades and master of none. Adding too many different services to your profile can appear spammy, confuse Google, and result in lower search rankings. Instead, focus on highlighting your specialized services that truly reflect your expertise and unique training style. By keeping your offerings focused and relevant, you can establish yourself as a trusted authority in your niche and improve your profile's visibility in search results.
Step 3: Request and collect reviews
Positive reviews from satisfied clients can significantly impact your credibility and reputation as a personal trainer, influencing potential leads to trust and choose your services.
There a two key advantages to having reviews on your profile
1. They automatically add a high level of credibility to you as a trainer and your personal training business. Having a higher number of 5-star reviews enhances the perception of your capabilities as a trainer among potential leads. Positive reviews from satisfied clients not only serve as social proof but also contribute to building your reputation as a skilled and reliable fitness professional.
2. Google prioritizes businesses with higher review counts, positioning them prominently in search results. By accumulating more reviews, you can significantly increase your chances of ranking near the top of search results for personal trainers in your area, particularly within your niche. This gives you an advantage over competitors and allows you to occupy valuable real estate on Google search results, surpassing paid ads and website results. As Google prioritizes businesses with more reviews, investing in gathering positive reviews can greatly enhance your online visibility, credibility, and potential for attracting leads, without having to pay substantial advertising costs.
The more reviews you have the better! Get as many reviews as you can from anyone you can: previous clients, current clients, friends, family, colleagues.. everyone!
I found that after about 10 reviews my business profile started showing up more prominently in search results, and as I got more it started showing higher over time.
Be consistent with asking for reviews, the more consistently you receive reviews, the more in-demand Google perceives your business to be.
Here is a script template you can use to send to ask for a review.
Hey [client name], Could you please leave a review on my business page? The ratings really help boost my rankings on Google. If you could mention in your review anything you have particularly enjoyed about our training I would really appreciate it. Here is the link -> [your review link here] All the best, [your name].
You can get the link by clicking the “Ask for reviews” button on your Google My Bussines profile.
Step 4: Create a website
If you already have a website skip to Step 5.
In order to effectively capture the interest of potential leads and establish credibility, having a website for your personal training business is essential. Most leads prefer to contact you through a website rather than texting, calling, or emailing. A well-designed website not only builds trust but also allows you to further communicate the value you offer in helping clients achieve their goals.
If you don't have a website yet, no worries! I can provide you with a guide on how to set up a website for free in just 10 minutes, complete with resources and templates to make the process easy and hassle-free.

Step 5: Optimize your website
Your website should seamlessly continue the storytelling we started in your Google My Business profile, clearly and concisely conveying the unique value you bring to potential clients. A professional website enhances your credibility, establishes trust, and serves as a powerful tool to attract and convert leads into loyal clients.
The primary objective of your website is to prompt visitors to contact you and book a session, allowing you to showcase firsthand why you are the right choice for them.
Your website should be designed to encourage potential clients to take action and reach out to you, whether it's through a contact form, a booking feature, or a clear call to action. Make sure your website is user-friendly, visually appealing, and optimized for mobile devices, so that visitors can easily navigate and engage with your content.
By providing a seamless and compelling user experience, your website can serve as a powerful tool to convert visitors into paying clients and help you build your business.
Step 6: Keep active with reviews
And voila, you now have a free lead-generation tool in place! Keep actively working on getting more and more reviews to further boost your credibility. With your Google My Business profile, website, and reviews in place, your lead generation system is all setup and passive as can be.
Congratulations! You have added a highly valuable asset to your business that will help you attract and convert potential leads into loyal clients. Remember to regularly monitor and update your online presence to ensure it continues to effectively support your business goals.
